Bud's Mitzvah Project
October 2014
A Mitzvah Project is a social-action project for 12 - 13 year olds; it is an official part of bar and bat mitzvah preparation. Mitzvah projects teach kids about the responsibilities of Jewish adulthood, encourage the value of tikkun olam, (world repair), and giving back.
Bud became a Bar Mitzvah on October 18, 2014. His Bar Mitzvah Torah portion was Noah, which contains the story of Noah and the ark he was instructed to build to save animals so that life in all its forms might continue after the great flood.
For one of his mitzvah projects, Bud helped Sam's Hope package and deliver pet food and supplies to partner food pantries, a subsidized senior living complex, and a cat shelter.
At one of the food pantries, he pitched in to help repackage pet food with another young volunteer
At a senior living complex, he got to meet and spend a little time with Bob and his cat Cleo, recipients of our pet food assistance program.
At the cat shelter, where we delivered much needed kitty litter, a big, beautiful cat named Billy took quite a liking to our young volunteer, and never left his side all of the time we were there
Bud also collected pet food at his synagogue and Haverford College during the High Holidays, and requested that donations in honor of his Bar Mitzvah be made to Sam's Hope.
An amazing $3,373.00 was donated to Sam's Hope in honor of Bud's Bar Mitzvah, as well as pet food and supplies.
Bud is an extraordinary young man with an infectious smile. We were absolutely thrilled to have his help and look forward to working with him on our new project, Meals for the Pets of the Homebound Elderly.
Bud, we think you are "PERFECTO!"
Donations made in honor of Bud's Bar Mitzvah will be used to establish "Bud's Fund," which will provide veterinary care assistance to pets with special needs.
