I met my beloved Sabrina Robin when she was 7 weeks old.  She was a total joy-it was love at first sight.  At the age of 6, Sabrina was diagnosed with IMHA, a brutal, mostly fatal auto-immune disease.  Every doctor at the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital told me to enjoy her now, because she was going to die.  Every doctor but one, Dr. Kimberly Hammer, who said she was going to try to find the right medication to reverse the IMHA.  Well, after 13 blood transfusions, 10 hospitalizations and 3 surgeries, my Sabrina lived to be 16 years and 3 months old.  She was my immune deficient, diabetic, hypertensive love of my life.  Of course, when I had her I had a very good job.  But, to tell you the truth, I would have gone on the street begging with a tin cup to save her life.  She died on December 28, 2011 at 12:28 p.m.  I will never forget her because as a tribute to this magnificent little dog, I have 5 tattoos of her on my body.  I look at them every day and remember her.  She will be in my heart and on my body forever.

"It came to me that every time I lose a dog they take a little piece of my heart with them and every new dog who comes into my life gifts me with a piece of their heart. If I live long enough, all of the components of my heart will be dog and I will become as generous and as loving as they are." - Anonymous

Spike Suzuki, a 12 Year Old Italian GreyhoundSpike Suzuki

Italian Greyhound

Beloved Dog of Diane Suzuki

Arrived at Rainbow Bridge - 02/27/2020

Today we said tearful good-bye to a beautiful, gentle and sweet dog, Spike, a 12 year old Italian Greyhound. I met Spike and his mom at our vet’s office almost a year ago; I fell in love with him first sight.

At the time, Spike was having problems with his teeth; his mom was struggling with how she would pay for his dental and extractions; I guess it was meant to be that I paid the impromptu visit to my vet that day.

After getting Spike fixed up, we took care of brother Gizmo’s dental work. Shortly after, we started going on nature walks; from counting feral cats at Core Creek Park to “deer hunting” at Playwicki Farm Park, to scaling the steep trails at Tyler…we all became friends through the enjoyment of being in nature.

I remember a trip we made to Warminster Park on an early winter day. We encountered a young deer that was walking around not far from the parking lot. We stood very still, dogs by our side, hoping not to scare the deer. On that day, I was walking Spike, and to my astonishment, the deer walked towards us, showing great interest in Spike. I was amazed that Spike did not move, didn’t bark; no reaction. After the deer satisfied his curiosity, he slowly ambled away, as I stood there, mouth open in awe of what just happened. Wish I had my camera with me to document the interaction.

Over the past few months Spike was no longer able to walk with us, as he was having issues with his neck and was on medication and crate rest. He stayed home with his little brother Giz, who had issues of his own; patella luxation.

Yesterday, things went bad; Spike was no longer able to stand up. In the early hours of February 27, he passed away, with his mom, dog and kitty siblings by his side.

Spike, you will be missed; I have fallen for many dogs in my day, but I have to say, you were quite special. And though you won’t physically be by our sides for the nature walks, your spirit will be there with us.

Godspeed…rest in peace…until we meet again.
